Organic Matters

For producers

Organic Matters is building the audience for organic food in New Zealand.

Listing is free for every farm in the country, and always will be. The organic directory — the map, the searches, everything a consumer reads as organic — is for certified and in-conversion producers, because that is what makes the word mean anything. Cost is never the reason a certified farm is not found.

The paid tools help turn that audience into customers for your business. They do not buy position, they never buy a badge, and we do not take a percentage of your crop.

What money cannot buy here

Ranking in a search result. A certification mark. An editorial mention. Those three are what the platform is for — selling any of them would empty the rest of it of meaning. Search order is by relevance and distance, and the verified mark means one thing: the certificate number matched the certifier’s own register on the date shown.

Listed

Free forever

Free forever, for every farm in the country. Certified and in-conversion producers appear in the organic directory and on the map; farms without a certificate have a page and a place here, outside it.

  • Full farm profile and map pin
  • Certification badge and number, checked against your certifier's register
  • Practices, energy, packaging, people
  • Link to your own website and shop
  • Regional network listing
  • Photo gallery
  • Post to the community feed

Tools for selling

There are two paid tiers — Grower+ and Producer Pro. They buy tools for selling: a product catalogue, prices and availability, enquiries, and the numbers that say whether any of it worked.

Neither buys a position in any search result, on the map or in any list. Neither buys a certification mark or an editorial mention. Neither takes a percentage of anything you sell.

What they cost is on your portal once your farm is registered, and we email the lot to you the day you claim your page. It is kept off this page for a plain reason: it is a price list for running a farm business, and it is no use to anybody who has not got a farm here yet.

What we will not do

Each of these is enforced by the database rather than by good intentions — if you want the specifics, ask and we will show you the exact rule.

The one producers ask about most: we send customers to you and take nothing from the sale. Every buy link on this site goes to your own shop, your own checkout, your own bank account. There is no route through this platform by which a sale of yours could even be counted, which is why there is nothing here to take a percentage of.

Getting listed

  1. Register your farm — its name, your region, and your certifier and certificate number if you have one. It takes a minute and there is nobody to email.
  2. You confirm your email address. That is what creates your account and your farm’s page as a draft — and it is what stops anybody registering a farm against an address they do not hold.
  3. We check your number against your certifier’s public register and record the date we did it.
  4. Your page goes up on its own, the moment the certificate checks out and your profile has what it needs. It says who certifies you, your number, and when it was last checked; if you are uncertified it says that just as plainly, alongside whatever you do that you want people to know about.
  5. You edit all of it from your portal, whenever you like. Nobody writes about a farm without the farmer.

If you farm another way

Regenerative, biological, spray-free, biodynamic without the certificate, or conventional and honest about it — you can register, and it costs nothing. What you cannot do is appear as organic, and it is worth being exact about where that line falls rather than letting you find it later.

What you get

  • A page of your own, with your photographs, your story, what you grow and how you sell it.
  • A place on Other ways of farming, which people reach on purpose, with filters for the approach you actually take.
  • Found by name. Somebody who searches for your farm finds your farm.
  • The same free listing, forever. There is no cheaper tier and no lesser one.

What you do not get

  • The organic directory — the map, the region lists, the seasonal searches, anywhere a result is read as organic.
  • A verified mark. That means one thing here: a certificate number matched a certifier’s public register on a stated date.
  • Grower+ or Producer Pro. The paid tools are for certified and in-conversion producers, so there is nothing here to sell you.
  • Your page says plainly that you are not certified, and that the inputs nobody has checked are exactly that — unchecked, not proven absent and not alleged present.

None of this is a judgement about your farming. Plenty of the best growing in this country happens without a certificate, and plenty of certified operations are unremarkable. Certification is not a measure of quality — it is the one claim on this site that somebody independent has checked, and the whole platform rests on it meaning that and nothing broader.

If certifying is something you have thought about, what it takes sets out what each of the four certifiers asks for, how long conversion runs, and who is already growing what you grow. Once your farm is registered, your portal has a button that tells us you are considering it — you will hear back from a person, and nothing about it appears on your page.

Your data

Your farm’s information is yours. You can export it or ask for it to be taken down, and the privacy statement says what we keep afterwards and why — the short version is that the record a change happened survives, without you attached to it.
